Whiplash

Description

Whiplash refers to an injury of the neck that is the result of a sudden excessive force that causes the neck and head to jerk forward and then backward or vice versa, such as in a auto crash. The injury typically affects muscles, discs, nerves, ligaments, and tendons in the neck. It can also occur in contact sports, other activities, or work accidents that might involve a sudden impact. Although whiplash is a common injury experienced by millions of Americans every year, it can result in structural damage that is difficult to detect and correct. If not properly diagnosed and treated, these injuries can undermine the structural balance of the body and set off a “domino effect” that can exacerbate over time producing a wide variety of symptoms from headache and extremity pain or numbness, to loss of mobility or even mental function.

FAQ

Frequently Ask Questions.

Chiropractic care can help with whiplash by treating the injured ligaments, spinal nerves and discs while also restoring proper motion to spinal structures

The best timeframe to see a chiropractor for whiplash is right after the injury but care should be sought regardless of the time elapsed from the injury date

A “stinger” or “burner” refers to an injury that is common in MVA’s or sports where the head is rapidly flexed to the side causing a stretching of the brachial plexus which results in weakness of the arm with burning and tingling pain down the arm

Chiropractic manipulations or mobilizations of the cervical spine have shown to have greater outcomes as opposed to passive modalities (TENS, ultrasound, diathermy)
